EDC 484 IPlan Peer Evaluation

Teachers in Rhode Island currently maintain their certification by showing evidence of continuous professional development. Creating an IPlan and reviewing the IPlan of a peer is a unit-wide assignment in the School of Education for all student teachers. The steps below are designed to guide you through this process so that we can complete it efficiently.

  • Review your journal entry about your school's improvement goals.
  • Complete a self assessment of your teaching.
    • Download this URI Self Evaluation
    • Complete the form based on one of the lessons you taught last week. Be sure to write down specific evidence from either your lesson plan or your memory of your enactment for each assessment you give.
    • Use a highlighter to identify areas of your teaching/lesson that were either below standard or that you feel needs improvement
  • Synthesize your review by completing the following table as best your can:

What is the need?
How will improvement help your students?
How will improvement help your school?
RIBT Standard/Element Addressed?
1.
Classroom Management Skills
Having better classroom management skills will help my students have better social interactions, encourage positive behavior, reduce discipline problems, encourage self-motivation, and active engagement during lessons
Improvement in this area will help my student succeed in my classroom, as well throughout the rest of their classes.
RIBTS 6: Teachers create a learning environment that encourages appropriate standards of behavior, positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
  • measurable/observable
  • should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
  • should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
  • linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.

In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.

I. Professional Development Goal

After completing a self evaluation, I decided that my professional development goal is to improve on my classroom management skills. I want my classroom environment to be one that fosters learning and is a safe place for my students to thrive in. Because I am student teaching, and am working very closely with my cooperating teacher who has already set up her classroom environment, it will be necessary for me to learn how to do this when I have a classroom of my own. I want students in my classroom to wonder, and ask questions. To do this, I want to learn classroom management skills that foster mutual respect between all the students and myself. This will minimize classroom interruptions, distractions, and discipline problems, while leaving more time for exploration and learning.

By enhancing my classroom management skills, it will improve my teaching, keep me more organized, improve student achievement and improve the overall learning environment. Improving my classroom management skills directly addresses RIBTS 6 which states that, "Teachers create a learning environment that encourages appropriate standards of behavior, positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation." Some possible skills I would like to learn is how to incorporate technology to assist me in classroom management, setting up lindependent learning stations around the room, how to minimize discipline issues and how to deal with them, etc. I think that when any teacher learns new classroom management techniques, both the teacher and the students benefit greatly. Improving my classroom management skills, and teaching these skills to the student, will help them succeed in other subjects in school. This is why I choose this as my professional development goal.

Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.

II. Professional Development Plan

One way to accomplish my professional development goal of improving my classroom management skills, is to attend various workshops, conferences, or training sessions that address classroom management. Some workshops that I found that will help me reach my goal are "Positive behavior supports", "Transforming Out of Control behaviors in children and adolescents", "YoGuides: Creating a calm classroom environment.", and "Introduction to social thinking". These workshops will teach me various skills and techniques that I can implement in my own classroom. Also, I can utilize various online resources, case studies, and teaching articles that are constantly providing support to teachers like myself, who are looking to improve their classroom management skills.

Another way I plan on reaching my professional development goal, is to take a college/univeristy course on classroom management. I feel that by taking a class on classroom management at a university, I will not only learn from the coursework, but I will also have to opportunity to collaborate with my peers. This will allow me to learn from other teacher's experiences, ideas, and techniques that have worked for them. I feel that I can learn a lot from techers who have more experience than myself; they know what does not work and what has worked in the past. Taking a college/university course on classroom management would provide me with an abundance of techiniques and resources to improve my classroom management skills, as well as the chance to collaborate with other teachers on this subject.
